Political Memecoins Drive Investor Disillusionment, Study Finds

A recent study has revealed that politically themed memecoins, such as TRUMP, LIBRA, and CAR, have attracted a significant number of first-time crypto investors. However, these investments have led to substantial financial losses, causing widespread disillusionment among newcomers to the cryptocurrency market.

Memecoins’ Popularity Draws First-Time Investors but Ends in Disillusionment
A comprehensive survey conducted by Chainplay in collaboration with Storible examined the investment patterns of 1,066 cryptocurrency investors. The study found that nearly 80% of participants had purchased political memecoins, particularly those associated with well-known figures such as TRUMP, LIBRA, and CAR. Notably, approximately 37% of these buyers were entering the crypto space for the first time, driven by the viral nature and political associations of these digital assets.

Despite the initial excitement surrounding these politically endorsed tokens, the study uncovered a harsh reality: 21% of first-time investors chose to exit the crypto market entirely after suffering losses from memecoin investments. The findings suggest that rather than fostering sustained engagement in digital assets, these politically themed memecoins have contributed to investor fatigue and skepticism.

High Volatility and Pump-and-Dump Cycles Undermine Confidence
The study underscored that the speculative nature of memecoins, characterized by extreme price fluctuations and rapid pump-and-dump cycles, has played a significant role in discouraging investors. Many participants expressed frustration over the lack of sustainable value in these assets, with some branding them as little more than short-term hype-driven schemes.

The research report stated:
“This suggests that, rather than fostering long-term engagement in the market, these memecoins have led to significant disillusionment. The high volatility, rapid pump-and-dump cycles, and lack of sustainable value may have turned many newcomers away.”
Majority of Political Memecoin Investors Facing Losses
Despite the initial hype surrounding these tokens, their value has plummeted dramatically since launch, leaving the majority of holders in the red. According to the study, nearly two-thirds of those who invested in president-endorsed memecoins have incurred losses.

As of February 19, data from the survey showed that nearly 560,000 TRUMP token investors, representing 52.3% of holders, were experiencing losses. Among them, nearly 545,000 had lost up to $10,000, while 287 investors had suffered losses exceeding $1 million. The collective loss for TRUMP token investors was estimated at $3.6 billion.
Similarly, the LIBRA token has proven disastrous for the majority of its investors. The study indicated that three-quarters of LIBRA investors were in a financial deficit, with over 101,000 investors having lost up to $10,000. While 26 LIBRA investors had lost more than $1 million, the study interestingly found that around 36 individuals managed to gain over $1 million in returns, highlighting the highly uneven nature of these speculative assets.
Investors in the CAR token also faced significant losses, with 66% of holders finding themselves in negative territory. However, a small fraction—0.07%—managed to earn more than $100,000, again emphasizing the highly speculative and risky nature of these assets.

Memecoins’ Mass Appeal and Their Long-Term Impact on Crypto Adoption
The study concluded that while politically affiliated memecoins have demonstrated the ability to drive mass participation in the crypto market, they have also exposed the risks inherent in speculative investments. Many investors, especially newcomers, have been left disillusioned after suffering financial setbacks.
“This is an alarming trend, as widespread negative experiences could slow down broader adoption and trust in digital assets,” the study concluded.
The findings raise concerns over the long-term impact of these high-risk investments on the cryptocurrency industry. If political memecoins continue to attract investors without providing sustainable value, they could undermine confidence in digital assets and slow mainstream adoption.
Final Thoughts
While politically themed memecoins can generate significant buzz and attract retail investors, their speculative nature makes them a double-edged sword. For investors, understanding the inherent risks of these assets is crucial before making financial commitments. As the crypto industry evolves, regulatory measures and investor education may play a key role in ensuring that the market remains a viable option for both newcomers and seasoned participants.
